This course will introduce students to the fundamental sculptural processes. Emphasis will be on students executing, understanding and discussing quality craft, successful composition, productive conceptualization and creative problem solving. Students will explore various sculptural methods including modeling, molding, construction and assemblage. The students will build upon concepts and techniques to create works revealing a personal voice while seeking quality and an in-depth study of the artistic process for creating relief or free standing utilitarian or aesthetic works and installations. The students will employ 21st century skills that include creativity, critical thinking, communication, flexibility, perseverance and time management. Students will regularly reflect on aesthetics and art issues as individuals in written artist statements and as a group through critique. In the final quarter, there is a required analysis of completed works, representing a personal portfolio that is documented digitally for presentation to validate growth and explain the student’s understanding of concepts, art media, techniques and historical references of artists, styles and periods. The works created in this course will provide portfolio development to prepare and vertically align with the Advanced Placement 3D course.
