Beginning Visual Arts (Art I)
Prerequisite: None
Open to Grades: 9 - 12 Supplies Needed: Yes ($) This is a fundamentals course that offers a basic introduction to elements/principles of art and design, media, color theory, art concepts/techniques, critique, and history of art. It provides experience in drawing, design, color, painting, graphics, sculpture, ceramics, crafts, and art appreciation. Honors Visual Art Proficient (Honors Art III)
Prerequisite: Art I
Open to Grades: 10 - 12 Supplies Needed: Yes ($$) This course curriculum includes 2-D Design and 3-D Design work ranging from a 2-dimensional surface to a 3-dimensional sculpture. It is designed for highly motivated art students with previous art experience and it will also meet the individual needs of students planning on pursuing AP 2D Design or AP 3D Design. Independent research in a variety of off campus art venues will be required. This course is designed to provide portfolio development to prepare and vertically align with the Honors Advanced 3D Specialization and Advanced Placement 2D and 3D Design courses. Honors Visual Art Advanced (Honors Art IV)
Prerequisite: Art I or Art III
Open to Grades: 11, 12 Supplies Needed: Yes ($$) This course curriculum focuses mainly on the fine arts of drawing and painting with some additional work in 2D Design; it is designed for highly motivated art students with previous art experience and those planning to pursue AP Drawing. The course will involve a more advanced study of art processes, media, history, written expression, and constructive criticism. Independent research in a variety of off campus art venues will be required, as well as a minimum of two papers. This course is designed to provide portfolio development to prepare and vertically align with the Advanced Placement Drawing course. |
Photographic Design I
Prerequisite: None
Open to Grades: 10 - 12 Supplies Needed: Digital Camera Required Photographic Design is an introductory course in photography designed to expand the student's skill as a photographer with emphasis on composition and design. This class broadens understanding of need and use of photography. We will study the elements and principles of design as they relate to photography. Students will have a photography assignment due every one to two weeks and will do design related projects in class to supplement their skills in composition. Honors Advanced 3D Specialization (Honors Sculpture)
Prerequisite: Honors Art III
Open to Grades: 11, 12 Supplies Needed: Yes ($$$) This course will introduce students to the fundamental sculptural processes. Emphasis will be on students executing, understanding and discussing quality craft, successful composition, productive conceptualization and creative problem solving. Students will explore various sculptural methods and will build upon concepts and techniques to create 3-dimensional works. Students will also employ 21st century skills and regularly reflect on aesthetics and art issues as individuals in written artist statements and in group critique. The works created in this course will provide portfolio development to prepare and vertically align with the Advanced Placement 3D Design course. Drawing: Honors Art IV 2D Design: Honors Art III/Photographic Design 3D Design: Honors Art III/Honors Sculpture Open to Grades: 11, 12 Supplies Needed: Yes ($$$) This course is designed for highly motivated and talented students who are seriously interested in the study of art. Students are required to take the Advanced Placement Studio Art Exam. The exam consists of the student's completed portfolio of three sections: Concentration, Breadth, and Quality. The portfolio will be graded for college credit and then returned to the student. Using many artistic techniques, the students are able to explore a wide range of media. Inventive and observational works are encouraged, while innovation and creativity is a necessity. An additional Studio Lab course is recommended (with exception to 2D Photography) to be taken with Advanced Placement Studio Art. |
Northwest Visual Arts Program Policy
It is important to understand that continuing in the visual arts program takes commitment, responsibility, and drive, in addition to creativity. Therefore, students who receive a final average below a C/70 will not be recommended to continue in the visual arts program.
